How to Remove Tangled Fur from a Faux Fur Coat?

2026-01-14

Your faux fur coat has been worn for quite some time—three to five years—and you've suddenly noticed tangles and matted patches forming. Not only does this affect its appearance, but it can also damage the fabric. But don't rush to send it out just yet. Here are a few simple methods you can easily tackle at home. Let's dive right in.

First, pre-treat the fur with gentle tools—this is the most basic and safest step. Grab a wide-tooth comb or a specialized faux fur brush. Gently comb from the roots toward the tips. If you encounter tangles, don't force them apart. Instead, slowly work through them with the grain of the fur. For looser knots, you can also gently untangle them with your fingers. Avoid using a stiff brush, as it might scratch the fibers.

For stubborn tangles, soften them with a little moisture. Use a spray bottle filled with room-temperature water to lightly mist the tangled area, dampening the fibers slightly (be careful not to over-spray and risk damaging the fabric). Let it sit for 1-2 minutes before combing through—this will make the tangles easier to untangle. Remember, never use hot water, as high temperatures can cause synthetic fibers to deform.

If tangles are accompanied by dust or odors, use a mild cleaning product. Dilute a small amount of neutral detergent (such as synthetic fur-specific cleaner) in water. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and gently wipe the tangled area. Rinse off any residue with clean water, then comb the fur smooth and air-dry naturally. Avoid vigorous rubbing throughout the process to prevent further tangling and shedding.

Avoid these common mistakes: Do not use a hairdryer on high heat to dry it, do not expose it to direct sunlight, as high temperatures can damage the texture of the synthetic fibers. Do not trim it with scissors, as this can damage surrounding fibers and affect the overall appearance. Do not use a lint roller to remove hair, as it may pull and cause shedding.

Proper storage also minimizes tangling: Hang using wide-shouldered hangers to prevent compression. Before storing, brush the fur smooth, place in a dust bag, and keep away from damp or high-temperature environments. With consistent care, your faux fur coat will maintain its fluffy, smooth texture, reduce tangling issues, and extend its lifespan.
